This project involved the design of a new custom home and pool on a 2 acre wooded site with expansive views of the Russian River Valley. The property was steeply graded and only provided a small buildable footprint due to drainage and structural constraints. Furthermore, the budget required that the form be extremely simple. The design evolved into a modern, loft-style barn- a form that blended comfortably with the surrounding rural landscape. A simple floor plan, a pitched standing seam metal roof and repetitive fenestration accomodated the budget and the program within a clean, modern box. A strong connection to the wooded site was achieved with the use of old growth exterior barn siding. To balance the rustic nature of this surface, the design incorporated a completely open, modern plan with a perimeter wall wrapped with 20 ft tall custom aluminum windows. Each sliding door provides access to the exterior from all sides of the house.
